Since the end of the Cold War, a number of military complexes and sites in the Netherlands have become redundant. Military use of this range ceased in 2006, "due to peace." In 2009, the area was sold to the IJssellandschap Foundation, and this wet heathland is now a private nature reserve.

Photographing a place like this makes you think. The peace that once seemed so certain is gone; Europe is currently ramping up its military capabilities.

The film I used here is an experimental stock, handmade by Igor Poliakov. Igor explores the many secrets behind photographic film production and experiments with making orthochromatic film in his shed—all while living through wartime.

I can't possibly grasp the stress when every day is affected by aggression and uncertainty. Hope there will be peace soon and thank you Igor for making this amazing film.

The film was developed in Rodinal 1:25 for 14 minutes at 20°C.
